As per usual, James was late for school. It was the same old story. His mom had to leave early for work and she would wake James up as she left. Most mornings, James would wake up an hour later, still in his bed, and have to rush to get to school on time. This morning though, James was particularly late. He realized as he ran out the door that he only had 15 minutes to get to school. It was only a few blocks away but being all of 10 years old, it always seemed like a much greater distance. He started walking briskly, barely paying attention to what was going on. This was his usual demeanor. James would often daydream as he went about his daily life. It was for this reason that he failed to notice the car, driving towards him as he crossed the road. He managed to snap back into action at the last minute and jumped out of the way. James thought the car might stop and maybe the driver would make enough of a fuss that he might even get a lift to school. The car continued to drive on regardless of what had just happened. James was standing back up when he spotted an ipod on the ground in front on him.
James picked it up and looked around for it’s owner. There was no immediate reaction and after a minute, he decided that he would hold onto it and maybe mention it at school. A lot of the kids who went to his school lived around here. Maybe it belonged to one of them? He remembered he was late for school. He decided he would search for something on the ipod that he could listen to that would help him walk quicker and so, get to school quicker. He put the earphones and shuffled through some of the tracks on the ipod. He went through a few boring songs before he landed on a popular, upbeat pop song. It wasn’t what James would normally have listened to but it was cheery enough that it would get him to walk at a faster pace. He started walking while listening to the song. His attention became divided between his own daydream thoughts and the song and so he didn’t notice the changes brought on my the song.
As he walked, he failed to notice that he was getting taller. Quite a few years older too, someone around the age of 15 or 16. His body also began to change as weight was shifted around. His hair grew out into long, black streaks that framed his face. To anyone who happened to look, he now looked like a teenage girl in boy’s clothes. His clothes had stretched and shifted into a t-shirt covered by a jacket. His jeans had changed colour to pink and his converse were now replaced by boots with fluffy top halves. As the song moved towards it’s conclusion, James’ face feminized. James barely noticed this though as his mind was also changing. She was a girl named Amber now. She was 16 and lived with her family just a few blocks from where James had lived with his mom. As the song ended, Amber realized she was finally outside the school. One of the staff members, Mrs. Cooper, was outside waiting for her as usual. Amber was always a few minutes late for school. She couldn’t exactly remember why she had been late this morning but that didn’t matter because Mrs. Cooper was walking over to her. “Amber, this is the third time this week. If you don’t make more of an effort, we’re going to have to send you to the principal’s office. Is that clear?” Mrs. Cooper asked. “Yeah, sorry. I’ll try to be on time tomorrow”. Amber responded. Mrs. Cooper gave a nod of approval and went to talk to another student who was late. Amber made her way into school and put on her headphones again to listen to music. She hit repeat on the song she had just listened to. She decided that her friends just HAD to hear this song.
